Solve centers, pair edges, then finish like a 3x3.
Reduction is the standard beginner-friendly 4x4 method. You first solve all centers, then pair the edges, and finally solve the cube like a normal 3x3.
This method is the best starting point because it clearly teaches the two things that make 4x4 different: center building and edge pairing. It also introduces parity cases, which are special problems that do not happen on a 3x3.
Reduction can take many cubers under 2 minutes with practice, and sub-1 minute is possible with better turning and efficient edge pairing. For more serious speed, many cubers later switch to Yau or Hoya.
