2x2 Method

Beginner Method

Step-by-step beginner guide for solving a 2x2 cube.

About the 2x2 Beginner Method

The 2x2 Beginner Method is the easiest way to learn how a 2x2 works. Because the cube only has corners, this method focuses on understanding corner movement, first-layer building, and simple last-layer solving without needing many algorithms.

This method is perfect for first solves and for building confidence. Most beginners can learn it quickly, and with regular practice many cubers can reach around 15-30 seconds using only this approach.

Eventually the beginner method becomes limited because it has more repeated moves and fewer shortcuts. If you want faster 2x2 times, especially sub-10 or sub-5, Ortega is usually the next step before learning advanced EG cases.

2x2 Beginner Steps

  1. Choose one color and complete the first layer (face + matching side colors).
  2. Turn the cube so the solved layer is on the bottom.
  3. Place unsolved top-layer corners above their correct positions.
  4. Use the beginner corner algorithm repeatedly to insert each corner.
  5. Orient the last-layer corners until all top stickers match.
  6. Permute the last-layer corners until the full cube is solved.
